For those asking what sort of jobs I’m looking for, I’ve been looking in a few areas:

1. Content & editorial strategy—professionally this is where my work experience is strongest, running content strategy teams, editorial processes, and creating teams to work with subject-matter experts to make their content compelling.
2. Digital transformation—I’ve done a bit to help organizations integrating digital tools into their work. I have gotten pretty good at shifting legacy processes and publications to digital-first publishing, migrating from legacy systems to open source, and from waterfall to agile.
3. Increasing organizational UX maturity—Along with digital transformation work, I help organizations move up the ladder of UX maturity. While much of my work has been helping teams with low UX maturity create practices from scratch, I would prefer to work with teams that have some maturity create innovative practices.
4. Digital strategy & community building—using digital tools to build spaces for communities that empower members to substantively contribute to policy rather than petitions and mailing lists as the primary focus.

Criteria:

• Short-term contract: Not evil.
• Full-time staff: Strong preference to teams creating social good as core to their mission and doing so in an inclusive manner.

Location:

Remote or east coast with a strong preference to DC, New York, Boston, or Philidelphia—good health care and trans-inclusive state legislatures are necessary for my partner and me.

I realize that beggars can’t be too picky. And though most of my work has been with nonprofits, this is not a hard rule. I would love to talk to for-profit organizations/companies.

• HTML/CSS (HTML5 & Sass), Mobile-first web design, interactive data viz (Good enough to build sites, not good enough to pass unit tests.)
• Science & electoral policy/advocacy

• Digital advocacy+fundraising

• Inclusive team building & project planning.

Problem spaces I’m most interested in:

• Expanding access to communities of knowledge and making complexity understandable (open data, journalism, gov data, public policy).
• Making civic and government tech more inclusive and responsive to public needs.
• Tech-mediated deliberative/participatory democracy (e.g. this workshop I helped lead).
• Building digital tools and communities for collaboration (e.g. Letters for Black Lives).
• Intersectional social+environmental justice.
• Editorial process and workflow design in communications and publishing teams (I help editorial and design teams build the processes and tools they use to write, edit, and publish).
• Digital infrastructure for the Persistence and progressive organizing (I am on the advisory board for ragtag team).

My dream is at the intersection of all of these; I keep thinking about stuff like the National Domestic Violence Hotline’s dataset—A lot of service nonprofits have data ripe for researchers and journalists to go in and pull out stories to tell the rest of us. I would love to find a place that could let me put together a project or group to build toolkits for groups that want to safely open up their data, and act as a central library to tell people that these data are available and what stories they might be able to find. And use that space to grow communities where people can build tools to teach and learn from and about one another—so basically something that sits between Sunlight, Open News, and ProPublica—more research-oriented than journalism, less government-focused than civic tech, while more publicly-accessible than academia.

I realize this is a mooonshot type of project and it’d be hard to find an organization that fits this criteria. I’ve mostly been looking for places that do good work and give me the security and time to work on these sorts of projects on the side as a part of my research. I am open to almost anything (no Koch Brothers subsidaries, please).
